Meet Your Preceptor, Dr.Augustus Hill

Dr. Augustus Hill
Board-Certified General Surgeon
Dr. Augustus Hill is a board-certified general surgeon who has been a pillar of the Washington, D.C. medical community for nearly 40 years. His career is marked by a profound dedication to surgical excellence, continuous learning, and heartfelt mentorship. As the leader of this program, Dr. Hill offers students a rare opportunity to learn from a seasoned practitioner in an intimate and supportive setting.
Dr. Hill’s distinguished educational path began at the University of Missouri-Columbia medical school, followed by a surgical internship at the University of Cincinnati. The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has a storied history of medical innovation, including the development of the first live, attenuated polio vaccine and the establishment of one of the nation’s first emergency medicine residency programs, reflecting a tradition of pioneering leadership.
The cornerstone of Dr. Hill’s training was his surgical residency at Howard University. This experience was formative, as Howard University Hospital holds a unique and revered place in American medicine. As the nation’s only teaching hospital located on the campus of a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Howard was founded in 1862 to provide care for formerly enslaved people and to train African-American physicians who were denied opportunities elsewhere. This legacy, which produced such trailblazers as blood bank pioneer Dr. Charles R. Drew, is built on a dual mission: achieving the highest levels of medical excellence while serving the needs of diverse and often vulnerable populations. The principles of service, equity, and resilience learned at Howard are the bedrock of Dr. Hill’s own practice and his approach to teaching.
Dr. Hill’s commitment to staying at the forefront of his field is demonstrated by his long-standing membership in the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). SAGES is a leading professional organization dedicated to advancing patient care by promoting innovation, research, and education in minimally invasive surgery. This affiliation ensures that the techniques and standards taught in this program are aligned with the best practices in modern surgery. With a subspecialty in endoscopy and extensive leadership experience as the Medical Director for both a dynamic, dual-site multi-specialty practice and his current solo practice, Dr. Hill provides a comprehensive perspective on both clinical and administrative aspects of medicine.

Meet the Clinical Team
During your rotation, you will be integrated into a cohesive and supportive clinical team. In addition to Dr. Hill, the practice includes experienced part-time clinicians who contribute to a dynamic learning environment.
A key feature of our practice is our bilingual staff. With a significant portion of our patients being native Spanish speakers, our Spanish-speaking team members are essential to providing compassionate care and creating a welcoming atmosphere. For students from Latin America, this means you will be in an environment that understands and values your linguistic skills, allowing for a smoother and more effective clinical immersion.
